Biographien: Bridgett

Biography of Bridgett

I am writing the biography about a young woman called Bridgett Afedzie. That is her official name but her Fanti name is Adwoa Akaaba. Adwoa is the typical Fanti name for a girl born on Monday.
Bridgett was the one who asked me if I want to write the biography about her. I was surprised about her self-confidence to ask just someone she barely knows. Especially because Bridgett seemed to me a bit shy at first but the more I talked to her, the more I found out how different my first impression and the real Bridgett are.
Within the 20 years of her life Bridgett has seen more than I ever imagined. In 2005 she travelled to Triechville, a town in Cote d’Ivoire, with her cousin’s wife to work. Because of some financial problems she had trouble paying the money for school. So she left home and worked there for four years to earn enough money so that she could go to school again. She came back to Moree, her hometown in Ghana, and her family in 2009 because of a civil war in the area around Triechville.

After some time back home she became a mother in 2010. Her daughter’s official name is Vera Chidi Vonney but at home she is called Chidema. When Bridgett talks about her you can really see how proud she is of her girl.

Being a mother also made Bridgett grown up and responsible for someone. When you see how she behaves in class you also see the difference between Bridgett and her classmates who are still a bit childish from time to time.
But her family also includes her parents Emmanuel Afedzie, who is a fisherman here in Moree, and Linda Abakah, who works as a fishmonger. Bridgett has five brothers: Isaac Nketsiah, Maxwell, Emmanuel, Ernest and Francis, so she is the only daughter of her parents. She and her whole family are Christians and they attend the Christ Savior’s Church. Bridgett’s oldest brother Isaac is married with one baby girl called Linda. This is the name of Bridgett’s and his mother, and he works as a teacher. Bridgett’s brother Maxwell works as a driver and Emmanuel is a carpenter. Ernest and Francis still go to school like their sister does. Bridgett now goes to the Moree Senior High Technical School again. There she is in the general arts class. But her favorite subjects are English and Government.
When she finishes school she dreams of being a nurse like many other girls do in Moree. But Bridgett herself wants to be a nurse because it is a job where you get respected by the people and because you can help many different people. She seems to be pretty sure about her future job and because of her strong will I really do not doubt that she will be a brilliant nurse in the future. But Bridgett does not just have plans for her career, but also for the rest of her life. Like many girls all around the globe Bridgett wants to marry and have two children including her little daughter.
But when Bridgett does not go to school she spends time, of course, with her family and in church but also with playing volleyball and ampe. Sometimes she also goes to the library or to the cinema to watch some movies like her favorite films ‘Untamed Soul’ or ‘The King is Mine’, which is a Ghanaian movie.
All in all the dreams and hopes of Bridgett for education and health to have a good future are not so different from mine even though we live under such different conditions and have really different backgrounds.
